WASHINGTON, D.C. \u2014<\/strong> I noticed on @lostlagers or @dcbeer that an aged keg of Senate M\u00e4rzen was being tapped<\/strong><\/a> on a recent Friday night. I tried the beer, brewed by Right Proper Brewing Co.<\/a><\/strong>, during Oktoberfest season last year<\/strong><\/a>. A history lesson from Lost Lagers<\/strong><\/a> of how they recreated the old Christian Heurich Brewing Company<\/strong> hand-written recipe was included. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Brewery<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Right Proper Brookland<\/strong><\/a> is located in an otherwise residential area. Inside there’s bar and a seating area, all dark wood. It looks like it’s been there for 75 years or longer, in the best of ways. To the right of the door is the main seating area with tables and stools. Several small families were starting off the evening when I arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Off to the left, there is an alcove that leads to the production brewery with a couch, table and cushioned chairs. The presentation was held here. Big windows showcase the actual working brewery, though a private party was in progress at the time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lost Lagers on Senate M\u00e4rzen, a Heurich beer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Mike Stein <\/strong>and Pete Jones<\/strong> of Lost Lagers recounted how the recipe was given to them by the original brewer’s granddaughter. They also had out the four malts used for the brew and offered samples. Mmmm…malt?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interestingly, the temperatures listed in the recipe were not fareneheit or Celsius, so determining that was part of the recreation process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the presentation, me, my broomball<\/strong><\/a> friends and other guests spoke with Stein and Jones about the beer, the industry, the Heurich brewery and its namesake and more. Good times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting there<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Right Proper is located in Brookland at 920 Girard St NE. It’s about a 10 minutes-long walk from the Brookland-CUA\u25cf<\/mark><\/strong><\/strong> Metro and mostly downhill. There aren’t sidewalks for most of the route though. It’s also near Rhode Island-Brentwood\u25cf<\/mark><\/strong><\/strong> station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cyclists can access from the Metropolitan Branch Trail via either Franklin or Monroe Streets and other local streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Street parking is subject to availability in the neighrbohood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
