That includes 6 postseason appearances (if you count losing the play-in game once) a pennant, a 7-game World Series loss to any even more snake-bitten franchise. Do you and fans realize you have had it fairly good? I suspect fans in the next city down the turnpikes, Pittsburgh, might trade a first-born for the Pirates to have that kind of era. Or does are you dwelling on not winning it all since the Truman administration?

VG: I mean, I certainly do. I realize that the worst thing you can say about this team over the past 30 years is that they haven’t won a World Series. But that can’t be diminished, especially because the Indians have lost not one, but TWO Game 7s in the World Series in extra innings in the span of 20 years.

About Vince Guerrieri

A prolific Ohio writer and editor, Vince and William were Gannett co-workers back in the day.

Vince is the author of Weird Moments in Cleveland Sports: Bottlegate, Bedbugs, and Burying the Pennant. He’s also a SABR author.

There’s a knock on current ownership for not spending big in free agency, and there will always be some day-to-day decisions that mystify fans, but generally, it’s been a pretty fun ride — especially since I can remember how miserable it could be to be an Indians fan in the 1980s.

It’s funny you bring up the Pirates. That’s always been one of my interesting hypotheticals: Would I rather be a Pirates fan or an Indians/Guardians fan? I can say the Pirates — who are currently the team that’s gone the longest without a World Series appearance, since they won in 1979 — have won a World Series in my lifetime. But they’re so bad that “Sell the team” chants break out at PNC Park, and they’ve been bad for a LONG time. So I think I’d rather have the lot of a Cleveland baseball fan than that of a Pittsburgh baseball fan.

WFY: This era of competitiveness is the product of:

1.) Well-run franchise

2.) Weak division

3.) Dumb luck

4.) Some higher power trolling you with competitive regular season teams

VG: Most of the above. The Dolans have definitely put the right people in place. (Another hypothetical I like to ponder on occasion is what might have happened had they, not the Lerner family, got the expansion Browns in 1999. Would we have gotten the sustained competence of the Guardians, with the added benefit of playing in a salary-capped league, providing no real financial disadvantage?) They had Terry Francona for a decade — longer than he was in Boston, actually — and appear to have made the right replacement with Stephen Vogt.

And the Central is a historically weak division — even though last year, four of the five teams made it to the postseason. I think luck’s a factor for any kind of success. I think if LeBron had Love and Kyrie in the 2015 Finals, it’s a different story. And I think if Carlos Carrasco doesn’t break his hand, the Indians win it all in 2016.

But what I really think has been key over the past ten years or so is expanded playoffs. It’s easier to get in, and anything can happen in October. In fact, I think that’s how the Guardians (and a lot of other teams) build a team: Good enough to win 80-90 games on the regular, get into the playoffs and then see what happens.

WFY: At the time of writing these questions, the Guardians were 1.5 back, not a bad place to be in early May. Are they playing over their heads, below their talent or right where they should be?

VG: I think they’re in a reasonably good spot right now. The old saw is that you can’t win a pennant in April, but you can lose one, and I think the Guardians haven’t lost one. What we saw in 2022 and to a lesser extent last year was a lot of things broke the right way, and a lot of players produced well, and in 2023, a lot of those players regressed to the mean or slumped. The Guardians are 19-14 as I’m writing this, but bbref has their Pythagorean record as 14-19, so they’re still catching some breaks. But there are questions about the team. Starting pitching, once a strong point, has become far spottier, and they’re trying to figure out what’s wrong with closer Emmanuel Clase.

WFY: How is the Guardians offense? What about the pitching – starting and bullpen? Is there anybody I should go to the ballpark to say “I saw … play” ? (No Nats come to mind FWIW…yet)

VG: The offense is still a little more anemic than everyone would like. Steven Kwan’s hitting, as is Jose Ramirez, and Kyle Manzardo appears to be developing into a real slugger, but everyone else is really inconsistent.

Ramirez is definitely a guy worth buying a ticket for. In seven of the previous eight seasons, he’s finished in the top 10 for MVP, including three top-three finishes.

Starting pitching is OK, but some of that is because Vogt is quick with the hook. Long term, that taxes the bullpen, but there seem to be enough arms to keep it going. Like I said, the big question is Emmanuel Clase, who was automatic right up until the postseason last year, and he seems to be getting tagged more frequently. (He’s 4-0, but that’s not the kind of record you want your ostensible closer to have.)

WFY: Is every Guardians social media post full of redasses claiming they will never support the team because of the new name and/or insisting the old name/logo is the “real” one? Because around here…

VG: Oh, my God, yes. There are a lot of people still mad about the name change. In appearances to promote my most recent book, I’d say the most common question I got was my thoughts on the name change. They weren’t actually asking to get my opinion.

WFY: Obligatory Browns question – is this a Rachel Phelps operation? Is it a suburban indoor stadium or nothing?

VG: Well, the Haslams are already talking about a potential Plan B that would involve renovating the current stadium, so I think they know that the Brook Park dome is still not a done deal. Basically, they want this new dome, but they don’t want it enough to pay for the whole thing. The price tag is around $2.4 billion for the stadium and all the ancillary development around it (which will be the BIG moneymaker). They’ll put up half, and are looking for public money for the other half. The problem is that nobody’s got a real appetite for it. The city of Cleveland will put up money for a renovation on the lakefront, but not for a stadium in Brook Park. The county is still a hard no on money for a Brook Park stadium, but they’re talking about money for renovations for the stadium downtown. Brook Park doesn’t have anywhere near the capability to issue any kind of bonds.

Gov. Mike DeWine has proposed a fund from an increase in the gambling tax to pay for pro sports facilities, but that got taken out of the budget in favor of a straight-up $600 million bond issue for a new Brook Park stadium. (Of course, I’m sure it’s just coincidence that the Haslams donated hundreds of thousands of dollars against an anti-gerrymandering amendment, and it’s the hacks that are staying in office that are supporting this bond issue. Definitely money better spent than on Deshaun Watson.) And is so often the case, the economic development benefits touted by the Haslams appear dubious. But my favorite takeaway from this is that a state legislator introduced a bill that will only fund construction for good teams.

WFY: How is Lane Thomas doing? In 2023, he told me at a photo op he’d “take care of the Giants and had an amazing series. I recall he had a rough start in The Land followed by post-season redemption.

VG: That is precisely what happened last year, so expectations were high. Unfortunately, he got hit by a pitch at the home opener, and the bruised wrist has kept him on the shelf since.

WFY: During the ALCS, I learned of “Big Christmas” which might be my favorite recent baseball nickname. How is Jhonkensy Noel performing this season?

VG: Not great. He’s not an everyday player, but his slash line (.169/.191/.277) is disconcerting. He shows brief moments of power, but hopefully he gets on track.

WFY: How does this series for? How far do the Guardians go in 2025?

VG: I think the Nats take 2 of 3, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Guardians take 2 of 3.
