Ask me how I found out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In short, I was kicked off the <strong>424<\/strong> leaving at 2:15 p.m. Maybe the 424 had other cars with standing racks, but the conductor didn&#8217;t share that information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My solution was to bike over Frager&#8217;s Hardware, by a couple of bungie cords and then head back to Union Station. I arrived in time for the <strong>426<\/strong> at 3 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The train I was on this time had a standing rack, so the bungie cords weren&#8217;t even needed. Of course, I had to get on first and Union Station is not a high level platform. I have some experience getting onto trains that way.<sup data-fn=\"f214c32c-2485-46a8-9485-2051fb14acce\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"f214c32c-2485-46a8-9485-2051fb14acce-link\" href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/#f214c32c-2485-46a8-9485-2051fb14acce\">1<\/a><\/sup><sup data-fn=\"497b2939-33e9-4d59-84a0-c81d12dd64e6\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"497b2939-33e9-4d59-84a0-c81d12dd64e6-link\" href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/#497b2939-33e9-4d59-84a0-c81d12dd64e6\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Payment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are three options for buying a ticket:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A fare machine inside Union Station<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paying cash to a conductor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using the MARC app, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mta.maryland.gov\/charmpass\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CharmPass<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wfyurasko\/54846128461\/in\/dateposted\/\" title=\"20251010_140326\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/31337\/54846128461_99e54fb86a_b.jpg?resize=576%2C1024&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" alt=\"20251010_140326\"\/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leaving Union Station (called <em>Inbound<\/em> by MARC), I purchased my $7 ticket from a fare machine. It&#8217;s more similar to what baseball tickets<sup data-fn=\"c2b5f7b7-9b2f-4bff-a796-b4c1de4b44ef\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"c2b5f7b7-9b2f-4bff-a796-b4c1de4b44ef-link\" href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/#c2b5f7b7-9b2f-4bff-a796-b4c1de4b44ef\">3<\/a><\/sup> used to be than say, an old-school Metro farecard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heading <em>Outbound<\/em> to Union Station, I paid cash to the conductor, $6. I liked her better than her colleague from earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike Amtrak, MARC does not add a surcharge for bicycles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exiting Odenton<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54845270352_11c25a9ce6_b.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"A bicycle on the Odenton station platform with a Baltimore-bound MARC train.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The platform at Odenton is long, so no need to be in a certain care on my train. It was also a high-level platform so getting the bike off was easier than getting on at Union Station. However, since I started later than planned, I could catch one of the few trains to Union Station in the afternoon rush, <strong>443<\/strong>, without any more waiting than it would likely take me to get to the Orange Line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I didn&#8217;t see any signs from the WB&amp;A Trailhead to MARC Seabrook like I did on the northern end for MARC Odenton. I didn&#8217;t see any from MD 450 Annapolis Road either. There is a wide sidewalk\/multi-use path along that road all the way to Seabrook Road. Other than one overgrown section, it was a low-stress ride. Seabrook was on-road, but traffic was reasonable, so I wasn&#8217;t bad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It took a little figuring out how to get to the station platform and then to find the tunnel under the tracks. Time was on my side though, so I even took a sidequest to a convenience store on the other side of Lanham-Severn Road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While I waited, I saw several trains go by, though sadly, not a brand new Acela. The old Acela though blew past me and I certainly felt it. I anticipate doing it again some time soon, before it gets too cold. I&#8217;m considering going up to BWI Airport station and heading over to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aacounty.org\/recreation-parks\/parks-trails\/anne-arundel-county-trails\/ba-trail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">B&amp;A Trail<\/a><\/strong> towards Annapolis via the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aacounty.org\/locations\/bwi-trail-thomas-dixon-jr-aircraft-observation-area\">BWI Trail<\/a><\/strong>. As I mentioned, I could have taken to the WMATA Orange line within a reasonable distance of the trailhead or even taken a Metrobus to get to there. The B&amp;A Trail will require going back to where I started.<sup data-fn=\"660fb149-a74b-49df-8e7d-8f7e81eba648\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"660fb149-a74b-49df-8e7d-8f7e81eba648-link\" href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/#660fb149-a74b-49df-8e7d-8f7e81eba648\">5<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a catch though&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MARC service is commuter-focused &#8211; it&#8217;s <strong>Ma<\/strong>ryland <strong>R<\/strong>ail <em><strong>C<\/strong>ommuter<\/em> after all. There are service limitations, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mta.maryland.gov\/schedule\/marc-camden\"><strong>Camden Line<\/strong><\/a> only has 9 trains a day on weekdays to Washington and 11 to Baltimore. No weekend service is available.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only four weekday MARC trains travel the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mta.maryland.gov\/schedule\/marc-brunswick\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Brunswick Line<\/strong><\/a> , split between Frederick and Martinsburg, WV terminals. So, that pretty much rules out going out to Brunswick and biking back along the C&amp;O canal towpath unless it&#8217;s right around the summer solstice. It doesn&#8217;t run on weekends either, though Amtrak does on a limited basis. But that incurs bike surcharges.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>Penn Line<\/strong> has <em>some<\/em> weekend service though and on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mta.maryland.gov\/schedule\/timetable\/marc-penn?schedule_date=10%2F18%2F2025\"><strong>Saturday<\/strong><\/a>, it&#8217;s hourly during parts of the afternoon. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mta.maryland.gov\/schedule\/timetable\/marc-penn?origin=12003&amp;destination=11958&amp;direction=0&amp;schedule_date=10%2F19%2F2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sunday<\/a><\/strong> is much less though and Seabrook is not on the schedule either day. Trains generally don&#8217;t reach the Perryville terminus<sup data-fn=\"14cc0f5d-d3b8-478d-86f7-c0c0314c2474\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"14cc0f5d-d3b8-478d-86f7-c0c0314c2474-link\" href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/#14cc0f5d-d3b8-478d-86f7-c0c0314c2474\">6<\/a><\/sup> on weekends either. That&#8217;s for Amtrak.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, recreating this specific ride by MARC isn&#8217;t doable on the weekend, but including the WMATA Metro Orange line can be done without taking PTO.
