The commonwealth&#8217;s largest city and metropolitan area is dealing with a loss of funding and <a href=\"https:\/\/wwww.septa.org\/safety\/fra-emergency-order\/\"><strong>rail car restrictions<\/strong><\/a><sup data-fn=\"3e1b6e3c-3949-4d87-8c16-4694e0238459\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"3e1b6e3c-3949-4d87-8c16-4694e0238459-link\" href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/#3e1b6e3c-3949-4d87-8c16-4694e0238459\">1<\/a><\/sup>. I got to see some of that first hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-white-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#1f4fa3\">SEPTA Commuter Rail<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;ve gone to the Philly Bike Ride twice now and both times I&#8217;ve stayed near the airport. This is cheaper on both hotel room and parking than staying in Center City. SEPTA&#8217;s Airport line is quick into 30<sup>th<\/sup> Street station with a train every 30 minutes. The Eastwick station also has free parking &#8211; it&#8217;s worked out fairly well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54864096008_40ecd23602_b.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Look at my bike leaning against...SEPTA Eastwick Station, Philadelphia\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Look at my bike leaning against\u2026SEPTA Eastwick Station, Philadelphia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the Friday evening, I was disappointed to learn that bicycles were now restricted during rush hour. That wasn&#8217;t an issue in 2023. As a result, I had to wait until after 6:30 p.m. to catch a train to Center City for packet pickup.<sup data-fn=\"b5a5b645-09f9-4d3d-8ceb-35c972cbe444\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"b5a5b645-09f9-4d3d-8ceb-35c972cbe444-link\" href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/#b5a5b645-09f9-4d3d-8ceb-35c972cbe444\">2<\/a><\/sup> The train only had two cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thankfully, in the morning, there were no issues and I got right into 30<sup>th<\/sup> Street station with time to spare before the race. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Saturday, leaving Center City to go home though, was a different story. The train I had hoped to catch was outright cancelled leading to a 1 hour gap between trains. That was also only 2 cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SEPTA staff were professional though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-white-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#1f4fa3\">SEPTA Subway<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This time around, following my ride across the Ben Franklin Bridge, I figured I&#8217;d take the Market Street Subway (now called the L line) back to 30<sup>th<\/sup> Street. Since the No Kings march was in progress, I decided to give myself a better shot getting on the train by going up to <strong>Spring Garden Street<\/strong> station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-10.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-10.png?resize=1024%2C768&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"SEPTA Spring Garden station entrance under Interstate 95\" class=\"wp-image-32012\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-10.png?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-10.png?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-10.png?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">SEPTA Spring Garden station entrance under Interstate 95<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That worked, but the train got crowded quickly and stayed that way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for the station, Spring Garden is no garden, har har. It&#8217;s well integrated at street level, but at platform level it&#8217;s in the middle of Interstate 95. The station is not like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/category\/metro\">WMATA Metro<\/a><\/strong> stations in the medians of I-66 and Dulles Toll Road either or <a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/2022\/11\/cta-observations.html\"><strong>Chicago&#8217;s Red Line<\/strong><\/a> on the Southside. It&#8217;s tightly packed in with the lanes yards away and a fence, not a wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54864146710_b4875379f4_b.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"View of Center City skyline and noisy Interstate 95 from SEPTA Spring Garden Station.\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">View of Center City skyline and noisy Interstate 95 <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the train was crowded and I wanted to see the epic skyline view from the L, I stayed on past 30<sup>th<\/sup> Street. I managed to stay on until the end, 69<sup>th<\/sup> Street in fact. There, I turned around. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I wasn&#8217;t sure which station had the classic SEPTA skyline view and didn&#8217;t have time to stick my head out at some of the last elevated stops. It&#8217;s just as well &#8211; my phone camera wouldn&#8217;t have done it justice. I wound up getting off at the last stop before going back underground, 46<sup>th<\/sup>. That, it turns out, is not the amazing shot &#8211; it&#8217;s a few stations back. Perhaps on another visit, I&#8217;ll get a long lens for my DSLR and figure out which one has the great view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54862996627_f07a819907_b.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">View from 46th Street station looking down Market Street towards Center City Philadelphia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Either way, I added to my lifetime SEPTA <em>Metro<\/em><sup data-fn=\"7a2b6aae-13da-4f38-8921-3d7095fe2dfa\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"7a2b6aae-13da-4f38-8921-3d7095fe2dfa-link\" href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/#7a2b6aae-13da-4f38-8921-3d7095fe2dfa\">3<\/a><\/sup> stations entered, exited or transferred at three:<strong> Spring Garden Street<\/strong>, <strong>69<sup>th<\/sup> Street Transit Center<\/strong> (technically in Upper Darby) and <strong>46<sup>th<\/sup> Street<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-white-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-c548f1100d4a8e0e65785151a6546575\" id=\"patco\" style=\"background-color:#d11241\">PATCO Speedline<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54863850276_04c02105d0_b.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"PATCO City Hall station platform, Camden, N.J.\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">PATCO City Hall station platform, Camden, N.J.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like last time, I took the PATCO Speedline over to Jersey so that I could ride across the Ben Franklin Bridge. As with SEPTA, I ran into some friction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My plans were to enter the system at the reopened Franklin Square station which opened to great fanfare in April 2025.<sup data-fn=\"0be604db-8d5e-4e31-ade9-ac71bb549102\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"0be604db-8d5e-4e31-ade9-ac71bb549102-link\" href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/#0be604db-8d5e-4e31-ade9-ac71bb549102\">4<\/a><\/sup> However, the ticketing kiosk was only offering a full-day fare which is a lot more than I wanted to pay. So, I biked over to the 8<sup>th<\/sup> &amp; Market station. That wasn&#8217;t big deal, but since the No King protest<sup data-fn=\"1c1e9117-0678-4059-8285-abff863f987d\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"1c1e9117-0678-4059-8285-abff863f987d-link\" href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/#1c1e9117-0678-4059-8285-abff863f987d\">5<\/a><\/sup> was going down Market Street, I had to wait until I could find a gap to get to the other side. The elevator on the eastern side of Market Street was not operational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once in, I was able to buy my old-school cardstock ticket to City Hall station in Camden. After a bit of a wait, it was a quick pleasant ride over the Ben Fraknlin Bridge to Jersey. It was easy enough to get on and off before I biked back over to Philly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;ve now added two more PATCO stations to my total too &#8211; I&#8217;m up to 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-white-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-3467cf31dc9769974cd0f43868e3e046\" style=\"background-color:#1f4fa3\">The bones are good<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SEPTA&#8217;s funding crisis must be maddening to residents of the Greater Philadelphia region. The infrastructure is solid, though it could use some power-washing, among other things. The rolling stock is a problem though with several fires over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a <em>mediocre<\/em> system that should be a <em>good<\/em> system. The commuter rail lines are extensive and there is potential to better utilize the subway. There is even talk of building a new line to Northeast Philadephia &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/blvdsubway.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Roosevelt Blvd Subway<\/strong><\/a>. I wish them luck, it&#8217;s been a goal for over a century now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, as is often the case, the metropolitan &#8211; rural divide is holding this up. The Philly region is the economic engine of Pennsylvania and it&#8217;s not getting its share. Sound familiar? Now, SEPTA is dipping into maintanence funds to keep to the trains running. It&#8217;s a vicious cycle.
