Fairly late in the game, the plan was shelved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@Thom-TRA\"><strong>Trains are Awesome<\/strong><\/a>, a YouTube transit channel, revisited this idea in the video &#8220;What if the DC Metro used Pictograms?&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-white-color has-black-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-4debf8e63c8af74c1d283196faf99fa3\">Early Metro wayfinding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Massimo Vignelli<\/strong> of Unimark designed <a href=\"https:\/\/ghostsofdc.org\/2024\/04\/05\/massimo-vignelli-the-visionary-behind-the-washington-metros-iconic-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>the Metro station style guide<\/strong><\/a> (<em>Ghosts of DC<\/em>), not long after coming up with the now <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ceros.com\/blog\/nyc-subway-logo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">iconic New York subway signage<\/a><\/strong> (<em>Ceros<\/em>). When it came time to design the map, WMATA selected <strong>Laynce Wyman<\/strong><sup data-fn=\"dee97ebe-316c-4517-8aca-2278c1eeb953\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/#dee97ebe-316c-4517-8aca-2278c1eeb953\" id=\"dee97ebe-316c-4517-8aca-2278c1eeb953-link\">1<\/a><\/sup> though. He was advised to retain the the Vignelli theme. Wyman was best known for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lancewyman.com\/brand-project\/mexico-68-olympic-games\/\"><strong>1968 Mexico City Olympics<\/strong><\/a>. Following that, Wyman designed the <a href=\"https:\/\/lancewyman.com\/brand-project\/mexico-city-metro-system-graphics\/\"><strong>Mexico City Metro logo, icons and wayfinding<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wyman planned to use icons for DC as well, but according to TRA, Vignelli provided unsolicited advice to WMATA &#8211; &#8220;don&#8217;t.&#8221; WMATA listened and after half a century, the <a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/2024\/01\/2023-metro-station-tally.html\" type=\"post\" id=\"31311\"><strong>Metro map<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/2024\/05\/dc-metros-pylons-are-iconic-and-good-ux-that-other-cities-should-mimic.html\" type=\"post\" id=\"31245\"><strong>wayfinding have been iconic<\/strong><\/a> to the National Capital region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TRA spent much of 2025 revisiting this idea and coming up with a new collection of station pictograms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-white-color has-black-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-9f9fcd147bab4a30d92b80930dd91ed5\">Video<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What if the DC Metro used Pictograms?  (Reupload)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/d6anhtHy_I8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-white-color has-black-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-59d031a5fb2cc82a9cee690d8cda5f73\">My reaction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aside from the summary of the early history, TRA shares a personal use case for iconography &#8211; being asked by non-English speakers how to get to Dulles Airport. This supports his argument &#8211; some stations already have supplementary signage with an airplane icon and the airport code posted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For what it&#8217;s worth, I have never been asked by a non-English tourist how to get to an airport while riding Metro.<sup data-fn=\"b020b25f-1bba-4221-b9f4-37023a66881f\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/#b020b25f-1bba-4221-b9f4-37023a66881f\" id=\"b020b25f-1bba-4221-b9f4-37023a66881f-link\">2<\/a><\/sup><sup data-fn=\"71b2e021-1231-412d-bbf9-c091161e580a\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/#71b2e021-1231-412d-bbf9-c091161e580a\" id=\"71b2e021-1231-412d-bbf9-c091161e580a-link\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coming up with 98 different icons is challenging, particularly the farther out the line goes. It&#8217;s ambitious project and in addition to sharing it in the video, <a href=\"https:\/\/trainsareawesome-shop.fourthwall.com\/collections\/all\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/trainsareawesome-shop.fourthwall.com\/collections\/all\"><strong>there is merchandise<\/strong><\/a>.<sup data-fn=\"8c7876e6-4716-4fbe-9835-a2c5ef910ae3\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/#8c7876e6-4716-4fbe-9835-a2c5ef910ae3\" id=\"8c7876e6-4716-4fbe-9835-a2c5ef910ae3-link\">4<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He got the layups for Anacostia and Tysons Corner, plus Virginia Square is clever. The Pentagon City hot dog hits close to home. <a href=\"https:\/\/jus.tia.mybluehost.me\/website_3c1e0e40\/2007\/05\/pentagon-city.html\" type=\"post\" id=\"2071\"><strong>Or at least, it used to<\/strong><\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the whole though, I lean against pictograms for Metro stations. I side with Vignell&#8217;s minimalism approach here. While some pictograms could become iconic neighborhood symbols<sup data-fn=\"0b08531b-2394-4e24-b81b-ba0e796c2ba1\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/#0b08531b-2394-4e24-b81b-ba0e796c2ba1\" id=\"0b08531b-2394-4e24-b81b-ba0e796c2ba1-link\">5<\/a><\/sup>, 98 seems unmanageable. The counterpoint is Mexico city has almost exactly twice as many stations with unique pictograms. I think it would make everything cluttered though and would be challenging to come up with pictograms for stations like Franconia-Springfield and North Bethesda<sup data-fn=\"cf794c29-740f-4fcc-afd4-4514184b114a\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"\/website_3c1e0e40\/#cf794c29-740f-4fcc-afd4-4514184b114a\" id=\"cf794c29-740f-4fcc-afd4-4514184b114a-link\">6<\/a><\/sup>, etc.<br><br>TRA make a valiant attempt and I salute the effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What about you?
