Including the mayor.<sup data-fn=\"d749bdff-1026-4b31-ae80-6ad04269ac53\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#d749bdff-1026-4b31-ae80-6ad04269ac53\" id=\"d749bdff-1026-4b31-ae80-6ad04269ac53-link\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was my first trip after several years of consideration. The timing finally worked out and enjoyed my longest closed-course social ride yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The ride<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On a bit of an unseasonably cool early May morning, it was chilly, even blustery with the wind. I had on three layers<sup data-fn=\"6447ea45-fdd6-4d07-9ef8-f3fd1637f707\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#6447ea45-fdd6-4d07-9ef8-f3fd1637f707\" id=\"6447ea45-fdd6-4d07-9ef8-f3fd1637f707-link\">2<\/a><\/sup>, though some wore just bike jerseys.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>That<\/em> had to be frigid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was in Wave 2 which left promptly at 8:30 a.m. There were some non-Wave 2 cyclists too, but not too many. My understanding is the earlier waves are better and allows people to spread out a little more evenly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bike.nyc\/events\/td-five-boro-bike-tour\/map\/\">The official map<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nycbikemaps.com\/maps\/five-boro-bike-tour-map\/interactive-5-boro-bike-tour-map\/\">New York Bike Maps interactive map<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Manhattan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beginning in lower Manhattan, the Tour travels through shadowy canyons. After a few blocks along Church Street, it&#8217;s onto 6<sup>th<\/sup> Avenue (aka Avenue of the Americas) through Midtown. The Empire State Building and other skyscrapers occasionally visible.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed alignfull is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"6th Ave. Northbound Five Boro Bike Tour\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tZnPcyY1DDs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Not far from Washington Square&#8230;I wonder if Bubbleman is still around.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Central Park, the ride split into routes. I went to the left, figuring it&#8217;d be sunnier. At 125<sup>th<\/sup> Street, there were brief stoppages to allow foot traffic, but I managed to avoid coming to a complete stop.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bronx<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The time in grandfather&#8217;s native borough was short &#8211; the ride crossed over the Harlem River on 145th Street Bridge and then back into Manhattan over the 138th Street Bridge. My feet didn&#8217;t even touch the ground. The southbound lanes were closed for Five Boro while northbound was unchanged. It&#8217;s another 75 blocks of limited access highway, limited only to bicycles. Depending on the position of the border, my first time may have been on the Queensboro Bridge or once I arrived at the rest stop near the Triboro Bridge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55258899894_605efbba06_b.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"View of midtown Manhattan skyline through the Queensboro Bridge during Five Boro Bike Tour 2026\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Made the moment last&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Touching down in Queens proper, the ride goes up the arterial 21st Street. It&#8217;s nothing particularly interesting, just a stroad going past the kind of establishments that line them. The scenery improved as we approached as we approached Astoria Park and the Triboro Bridge. There was the first big rest stop with free snacks and beverage. Also, on that windy morning, the East River was full of whitecaps, reminding everybody that it&#8217;s actually a tidal straight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55259071630_fdd8fd7ac3_b.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"The Triboro Bridge from Astoria Park, a Five Boro Bike Tour rest stop.\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rest stop under the Triboro Bridge<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pulling out, it was back through Astoria, this time down 14th and cutting over closer to the river and Vernon Blvd. Occasional views of working industry, the river and Manhattan skyline were an improvement over the fast food and tire shops over the northbound portion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55258807063_7368885288_b.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Stopped at 36th Avenue in Queens at the Roosevelt Island connection during 2026 Five Boro Bike Tour\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">One of the few times I had to stop during the ride &#8211; 36th Ave. Queens.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We cut over along 44<sup>th<\/sup> Drive to get over to the 11<sup>th<\/sup> Street in Long Island City to finish out the Queens portion of the route. Crossing over the Long Island Expressway (I-495)<sup data-fn=\"c9bfe37b-36de-4948-8ecd-0c8974218e1a\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#c9bfe37b-36de-4948-8ecd-0c8974218e1a\" id=\"c9bfe37b-36de-4948-8ecd-0c8974218e1a-link\">4<\/a><\/sup> it was until the Pulaski Bridge into Kings County&#8230;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed alignfull is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Entering Brooklyn\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LmWLhf2B29U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Brooklyn, Brooklyn, Brooklyn we go hard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Brooklyn<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My second ever trip to Brooklyn went along narrower neighborhood streets, like Greenpoint and Franklin before entering a warehouse district. Into Williamsburg along narrow and generally unremarkable Wythe Street the buildings block out most of the new skyscrapers and New York&#8217;s homeliest suspension bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moving over to Kent Street, the ride passed Steiner Studios and a bunch of shipping containers. It&#8217;s then over to Flushing Avenue adjacent to the Brooklyn Navy Yard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turning right onto Navy Street, there was a rare incline which this far into the ride, was not&#8230;welcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Onto York Street and into DUMBO the route goes <em>down under Manhattan Bridge<\/em><sup data-fn=\"efcb3102-a49f-439d-bb0b-3fa7c4d6524c\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#efcb3102-a49f-439d-bb0b-3fa7c4d6524c\" id=\"efcb3102-a49f-439d-bb0b-3fa7c4d6524c-link\">5<\/a><\/sup>, the pavement turned to brick. <br><br>If the chatter I was hearing from other riders was accurate, the brick street has been around about as long as the &#8220;DUMBO&#8221; neighborhood name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Fulton Street, the lower Manhattan skyline opened up followed by the Brooklyn Bridge to the right. I was delighted to see on my left as oasis awaiting me&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed alignfull is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Stopping at a Sabrett stand during the Five Boro Bike Tour\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AHkthp513WQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I had decided I would stop at the first Sabrett stand I found. I expected it to be in Queens and not <em>after milepost 25 or so<\/em>. It&#8217;s a good thing I did not wait for the second, because it never appeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-f56f613f wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55309220740_b050e33ed0_w.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Sabrett stand at Fulton and Everit in Brooklyn\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55308809256_ba7667a471_w.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"View of the Brooklyn Bridge near Sabrett stand at Fulton and Everit in Brooklyn\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Can&#8217;t go wrong with a classic dirty water dog, but skip the french fries &#8211; stale, soggy, take your pick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following that <em>training food<\/em>, it was onto Furman Avenue which is notable for being the lowest level of the infamous and decrepit Brooklyn-Queens Expressway&#8217;s triple cantilever. It didn&#8217;t collapse on me. Yay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed alignfull is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Furman Ave, at the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway&amp;apos;s triple cantilever\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Xm8zSuxKdTI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">As much as urbanists hate on the triple cantilever, it&#8217;s impressive engineering&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shortly thereafter, it&#8217;s onto the BQE (I-278 westbound specifically)<sup data-fn=\"1e9b73e4-0c60-49ee-a7e6-ae16dc74146f\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#1e9b73e4-0c60-49ee-a7e6-ae16dc74146f\" id=\"1e9b73e4-0c60-49ee-a7e6-ae16dc74146f-link\">6<\/a><\/sup> for the rest of Brooklyn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed alignfull is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"BQE during Five Boro Bike Tour\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ErZa36Jq2hA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Another trench run on an interstate &#8211; I&#8217;ve done it on I-66 in DC too<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed alignfull is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Leaving Brooklyn? And in the wind, it was a challenge. Many people walked their bikes up the lower-level westbound lanes that were restricted to the tour. Not me though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed alignfull is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bicycling on the Verrazzano\u2013Narrows Bridge\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CdT3cr4wGx4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Didn&#8217;t even notice I was 200 feet above the water<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am not sure if being on the lower level shielded us from the wind some or made it worse. It was probably better that way. It was a lot though and I kept going without looking over too much. At this point of the ride, I was using what adrenaline I had to get to the finish line, just off the bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Staten Island<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think arriving in the County of Richmond on the downslope of one of the longest suspension bridges in the world is rather triumphant. Shortly after touching down, the course turns off to Fort Wadsworth &#8211; Gateway National Recreation Area and the finish the line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed alignfull is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The end of the Five Boro Bike Tour\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wuN6MAjWXE8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">My GoPro kept turning off after a few seconds. Good for clips, but I missed crossing the finish line. I guess I&#8217;ll <em>have to try again<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Finish Line<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The end includes a medal and some other activities. Mostly food trucks. Not a lot of free swag though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I made sure to get some photos taken, as one does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55258664126_b1eb451894_b.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Actually showing my face for a change. Also, we&#8217;re more than \u00bc of the way through the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century, I was hoping people could frame photos by this time. Among other things.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Getting to the ferry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-f56f613f wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You know what&#8217;s more fun than biking 40 miles? Adding another 10%! That&#8217;s right, the course may have ended at the foot of the bridge, but the Staten Island ferry back to Manhattan was another 4 miles away. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s like..an after party, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I enjoyed it though, it was clearly marked and I got to see more of a borough<sup data-fn=\"a12e699b-ffed-437b-b126-93cdcf8f5dcf\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#a12e699b-ffed-437b-b126-93cdcf8f5dcf\" id=\"a12e699b-ffed-437b-b126-93cdcf8f5dcf-link\">8<\/a><\/sup> that I had never been in before. There wasn&#8217;t a lot of fee swag there either, really just the bibs and helmet cover.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">What is the purpose of a helmet cover other than advertising? I do not see the appeal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">I am surprised at how few rest areas there are though I suppose doing it in Manhattan would be difficult. I only stopped at two.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The no backpack, panniers or other bag rule is <em>weird<\/em> and inconvenient, I had to go back to the Upper West Side to get my backpack which was my luggage for the trip.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">I was really surprised rent-able lockers, like the ones you see at ballparks, were not available. That would be quite lucrative. Perhaps nobody could provide enough to make it worthwhile though.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">That being said, I did not miss having a backpack on for 44+ miles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">My ride time &#8211; about 3:25, including stops at Astoria Park (about 15 minutes), Brooklyn for a Sabrett (another 15 minutes) and the BQE rest stop (under ten minutes). I was pleased with my speed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">I bought some Bike New York gloves &#8211; $30, I think. I don&#8217;t recall what my previous pairs (I keep losing the right glove) went for so I don&#8217;t know if that&#8217;s a good price or not. I was glad to have them on the chilly morning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">This was the first time I used my GoPro extensively. I don&#8217;t know why it kept turning off after only recording about 8 seconds. On the bright side, that saved a lot of editing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Photos from Bike New York are something like $75 a piece. I don&#8217;t need one that badly. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The cost of the ride varies throughout the year, but you aren&#8217;t going to get in for less than about $180.
