This post was scheduled to publish on May 24, 2025

Each year, Vince Guerrieri, a Rust Belt kind of guy, takes the time to answer some questions about his beloved baseball team when they play the Washington Nationals. He’s a prolific editor and writer in Northeast Ohio and found in several golden rolodexes. He wrote Weird Moments in Cleveland Sports: Bottlegate, Bedbugs, and Burying the Pennant and is a SABR author. Fun fact – he used to appear on an overnight Austrailian sports talk show sponsored by a funeral home.

WFY: Let’s get this out of the way – a 6:10 p.m. start on Memorial Day? What are the Cleveland Guardians thinking here? Also, rhetorically, MLB not putting the Nats at home on Memorial Day?

VG: Guards are coming back from the road (admittedly, it’s Philadelphia), so an afternoon start might not have been optimal. I’d like to see the Nats at home on Memorial Day (and the Fourth of July, for that matter), but nothing’s sacred anymore. The Reds used to be the first opener — and always at home — because they were the first professional team, but MLB can’t pass up that sweet, sweet ESPN (now NBC) money to have a game Sunday night. And now they’re even playing games in mid-March in other hemispheres. Cash remains king.

WFY: Was 2025 as an interesting Guardians season as it appeared to the outsider? A pitcher suspended for gambling allegations, yet a frantic finish to win the division, but lose the Wild Card.

VG: It’s interesting in the sense of the old Chinese curse, “May you live in interesting times.” The Luis Ortiz suspension threw everyone for a loop, but Emmanuel Clase getting suspended felt like an extinction-level event. He was the team’s all-time saves leader and was going to be the team’s top trade chip (especially with the development of other arms in the bullpen, chief among them Cade Smith) and then he got suspended. They’re probably both going to prison too.

Fact is, everyone thought this team was dead and buried in August. They had already had a 10-game losing streak from the end of June into July (just two shy of the team record) and went 2-10 in one stretch in August.

But boy, it was a wild finish. The expanded rosters let Stephen Vogt go to a six-man rotation in September, and they looked like Koufax and Drysdale in the 1960s. They got great production from their bullpen as well. And at the same time, the Tigers just absolutely peed down their legs.
The offense, on the other hand…

True story: The Guardians last year had the lowest team batting average ever to qualify for the postseason (.225) even eclipsing the 1906 Chicago White Sox, who were known as the “hitless wonders.” Ultimately, that was their undoing against the Tigers in the wild card series. But Detroit’s got other things to worry about right now.

WFY: Baseball Reference says payroll is down considerably – old contracts expiring or ownership cheapness? Attendance seems solid with over 2 million the last two seasons. Oh and up a few games in the standings heading to memorial day – are they in a good spot or just a little lucky?

VG: It’s almost become rote in Cleveland to say that the Dolans are cheap. And they really don’t spend a lot of money in free agency — although I feel like that’s due at this point to the fact that they might cash out on the team before too long, and there’s a lot of labor uncertainty in the game. (You’re probably going to see a lockout after this season.)

But they draft reasonably well — we’re seeing production from top picks Chase DeLauter and Travis Bazzana (the first number one overall pick in team history) — develop pitchers, especially, and run the team smartly, which leads to them getting good results. I believe the only teams that have won more games than them in the past decade have been the Dodgers and Yankees.

WFY: How is the red crown, blue bill home cap going over? It seems a departure from Cleveland history.

It really is. The Indians in the 60s and 70s used a lot of red in their uniforms (Boog Powell was famously said to have looked like a giant blood clot in the all-red uniforms in the mid-70s), and for years Indians caps were blue with red bills, but you don’t see a lot of red caps with blue bills in team history.

Generally, I think they’re leaning into more red since the name change.

WFY: Cleveland City Connect uniforms, discuss.

VG: I’m a fan. I think we talked about this before, but I feel like the team doesn’t lean enough into the Art Deco motif with its everyday uniforms (it really does on social media). I think the City Connect uniforms kind of make up for that. I actually got a Steven Kwan City Connect cap as a giveaway last year.

WFY: Which Guardian of Traffic is your favorite?

VG: The one with the stagecoach (see the hero image above), because it reminds me of the old Fisher Body logo, which I remember distinctly from the rocker panels of my grandfather’s Cadillac. There used to be a massive Fisher Body plant out on the east side of Cleveland, and the Fisher brothers themselves, the company’s namesakes, are from Norwalk (which is also the hometown of Paul Brown. The family moved to Massillon when he was young).

WFY: Is it a source of local pride that Cleveland is one the Air Route Traffic Control Centers while rival cities, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Detroit are not?

VG: Fun fact: The facility is almost literally down the street from me, in Oberlin. (Apparently, they wanted it near Cleveland, but not too close to potentially be a defense risk.)

Aviation is actually a hot topic right now in Cleveland. The current mayoral administration is actually taking steps to try to close down Burke Lakefront Airport, the smaller airport in the city. I’ve written about it. (If you’ve flown into Cleveland, you’ve flown into Hopkins. Burke doesn’t have any real commercial service, just charters and cargo.) Lakefront redevelopment is a hot-button issue in Cleveland as well, especially considering the Browns relocating to Brook Park, but more on that in a minute.

Air Show, Business Travel Make Closing Burke Lakefront Airport Difficult – Cleveland Magazine

WFY: Where does Nationals Park rate among MLB parks present and past that you have visited?

VG: Only been there once, but I really liked it. I also got to see a game at RFK, which I thought was an interesting experience. It was of that 1960s multipurpose ilk, but seemed to be a little more decrepit than its contemporaries, which I think was because of the 30-year gap for being used for baseball, and the general idea that it was just a temporary home.

WFY: A new social trend I’m seeing emerging on Opening Day and other event days is complaining about parking garage prices. You mentioned you just take the Rapid, Cleveland’s heavy, but soon to be light rail. Is the Rapid and the light rail lines well utilized by Guardians fans?

VG: There are actually four rail lines in Cleveland: The Red, Green, Blue and Waterfront lines. The Red Line is the only one that’s heavy rail, but they’re the oldest cars Cleveland runs. They’re in the process of being replaced.

RTA’s Red Line Overhaul Moves Into Construction Phase – Cleveland Magazine

The trains are heavily used when there are events downtown, be it Browns, Guardians, Cavs or concerts. I went downtown a couple weeks ago for a Cavs playoff game (they beat the Pistons!) and there was a baseball game and a concert at the football stadium. The Rapid really was the only way to travel.

Ordinarily, parking isn’t awful. For a regular season baseball game, you can park reasonably close by for about 30 bucks. But Opening Day or the playoffs? Forget it.

WFY: Are the Browns really going to move to the ‘burbs? On the one hand, playing indoors far removed from city seems to take away some of the soul of the team. On the other hand, playing next to the lake hasn’t won a bunch of championships in our lifetimes.

VG: That’s certainly the Haslams’ plan, although there is a class-action suit brewing about the main source of state funding, dipping into Ohio’s unclaimed funds to pay for sports venue renovations or construction.

The upshot is that the Haslams bought a piece of land near the airport that’s far bigger than a stadium footprint. They want the mixed-used development around the stadium, so they’re going to get richer, and it’s going to get more expensive to go to a Browns game. (Given their stewardship of the team, though, I’m sure you’ll be able to find secondhand tickets for 30 bucks in December once everyone’s given up on the season.)

Fact is, the Browns have played on the lakefront for the entirety of their existence (the current Browns stadium was built on the site of Cleveland Municipal Stadium), but it’s hard to talk about home-field advantage on the lakefront when Ben Roethlisberger still has more wins there than any Browns quarterback not named Baker Mayfield, and the stadium is more than likely to go its entire lifetime (30 years, if all goes according to the Haslams’ plan) without even hosting a playoff game.

WFY: Back to baseball, how does this series go and how does the Guardians season end?

VG: I think the Guardians take two of three. Gavin Williams, who leads the league in wins, was straight-up DEALING in his last start, against the Phillies (it was the first game in team history won 1-0 by a pinch-hit home run). Tanner Bibee has looked great, but he might be the unluckiest guy in baseball. He’s 0-6 because he never gets any run support this year (the team scores an average of 1.5 runs a game when he starts).

The Guardians were built to be a decent team, if not a great one, and it appears that’s all it will take to win the Central this year. The problem they usually run into in the postseason is that they just don’t have the offense to carry them forward. But they’re actually hitting the ball pretty well, and the kids are developing.
