He has some observations from his late May visit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have been watching CityNerd for a few years now and regularly look forward to his weekly videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed alignfull is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Washington: the Least American American City?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LiLR3r1NIuk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some highlights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Did CityNerd share everything that makes the District great? Not even close, but he captured A LOT in a day in a half visit:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Friday night impromptu dance parties in Dupont Circle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Adams Morgan &#8211; bohemian and diverse restaurant scene<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Georgetown &#8220;most infamously charming neighborhood&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Weekend street markets, Eastern Market<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Capital Bikeshare, bike lanes and Metropolitan Branch Trail<sup data-fn=\"8e50bf45-e422-475d-a7ea-4984c8002159\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#8e50bf45-e422-475d-a7ea-4984c8002159\" id=\"8e50bf45-e422-475d-a7ea-4984c8002159-link\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Wharf &#8211; &#8220;I think it&#8217;s pretty telling the places DC people hate would probably be considered good urbanism in most other U.S. cities.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Metro &#8211; &#8220;an absolutely, brutalist masterpiece.&#8221; &#8220;The system is 50 years old this year and is still pretty magical.&#8221;<sup data-fn=\"b46391f9-2eb0-4b61-8f59-83d009117d5d\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#b46391f9-2eb0-4b61-8f59-83d009117d5d\" id=\"b46391f9-2eb0-4b61-8f59-83d009117d5d-link\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">On National Airport and Metro: &#8220;Imagine being a left-leaning influencer and not taking public transit, especially how easy ti is here&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Union Station is about as good as an American train station gets.<sup data-fn=\"dba9e76a-c754-4f50-83ac-99059cb78870\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#dba9e76a-c754-4f50-83ac-99059cb78870\" id=\"dba9e76a-c754-4f50-83ac-99059cb78870-link\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Pedestrian signals having a countdown in the WALK interval gets his attention, but he concludes it&#8217;s &#8220;enlightened.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">&#8220;There&#8217;s not much to recommend downtown, other than the Metro stations themselves.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">15<sup>th<\/sup> Street bike lane<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Visiting Petworth during Porchfest<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I spent some time exploring Capitol Hill, which is just beautiful, walkable, gentle density urbanism. It&#8217;s also where a lot of our senators and representatives live on our dime when they&#8217;re doing our business.<br><br>And the irony is hard to escape. A lot of Congress people live their daily lives in the kind of smart, mixed-use urbanism that they then turn around and deny to their constituents. A lot of the people who represent us in the federal government claim to dislike any way of doing things that smacks of a European approach. Yet, they spend their days enjoying the benefits of the great urbanism of America&#8217;s most European city. I mean, they even have their own bespoke subway. It&#8217;s all just crazy making stuff.<br><br>So DC, undoubtedly a giant among the great US cities and with so many unique features, including the fact that this is roughly 700,000 Americans who are represented by zero senators, despite having a higher population than some that are represented by two. And Washingtonians are not even represented in the House in any meaningful way. It&#8217;s an injustice. And it also gives the people who live here maybe a bit more of a chip on their shoulder, a bit more of a shared identity and maybe a bit more community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s just a love-letter. I don&#8217;t need reminding that the District (and surrounding area) is a great place, but I enjoy seeing it through the eyes of a visitor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Previously on CityNerd<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The region comes up often &#8211; here are a few highlights:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/17upoRCn01s?si=GavBTXtI0bxjBfgC&amp;t=288\"><strong>The D.C. area is the 12th busiet transit city in North America<\/strong><\/a> per capita<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/SaK1tohYeVI?si=-t_cemNIwc2lJNJN&amp;t=209\"><strong>Alexandria has the 8th bet Union Station<\/strong><\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/SaK1tohYeVI?si=_hhBgXzwp8-nQ4uo&amp;t=790\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/SaK1tohYeVI?si=_hhBgXzwp8-nQ4uo&amp;t=790\"><strong>DC was 3rd<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The Best Suburbs in North America &#8211; Honorable mention: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/COrGXKPEqu4?si=kxUJTmYQg-uQewIp&amp;t=209\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/COrGXKPEqu4?si=kxUJTmYQg-uQewIp&amp;t=209\"><strong>Alexandria<\/strong><\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/COrGXKPEqu4?si=RjCUCiuDQYB6Htgz&amp;t=300\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/COrGXKPEqu4?si=RjCUCiuDQYB6Htgz&amp;t=300\"><strong>Arlington #10<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">He blew it not putting Nationals Park in the top 10 Urbanist Ballparks though. Not even even going to link that one after that strikeout.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">CityNerd made up for it with arenas though &#8211; Capital One Arena was #1 in <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/SaK1tohYeVI?si=2dwXxempGN64JgGE&amp;t=790\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/SaK1tohYeVI?si=2dwXxempGN64JgGE&amp;t=790\"><strong>10 Arenas That Fit Their Cities Seamlessly<\/strong><\/a><sup data-fn=\"b7093704-884d-4e12-8eca-0759c7e235a7\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#b7093704-884d-4e12-8eca-0759c7e235a7\" id=\"b7093704-884d-4e12-8eca-0759c7e235a7-link\">4<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Question<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Did CityNerd get better when he grew a beard, a la Will Riker<sup data-fn=\"c5d6b8c3-01fa-41de-bd3a-8b9c9437d67f\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#c5d6b8c3-01fa-41de-bd3a-8b9c9437d67f\" id=\"c5d6b8c3-01fa-41de-bd3a-8b9c9437d67f-link\">5<\/a><\/sup> on <em>Star Trek: The Next Generation<\/em>?
