Torn down in the early 1960s and replaced by the current Madison Square Garden<sup data-fn=\"4518d349-3b41-4588-bc94-1641a95eb405\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#4518d349-3b41-4588-bc94-1641a95eb405\" id=\"4518d349-3b41-4588-bc94-1641a95eb405-link\">1<\/a><\/sup>, what remains is a claustrophobic basement. My father said Penn Station&#8217;s destruction &#8220;was a sin.&#8221; Many others did too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#eeeeee\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/yurasko.net\/wfy\/2026\/07\/dc-to-new-york-with-a-bike-on-amtrak\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"32723\">DC to New York with a bike on Amtrak<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;One scuttles in now like a rat&#8221;<sup data-fn=\"d10377aa-76df-41d3-b014-7ea08647e2a4\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#d10377aa-76df-41d3-b014-7ea08647e2a4\" id=\"d10377aa-76df-41d3-b014-7ea08647e2a4-link\">2<\/a><\/sup> in the subterranean remains of Penn Station.<sup data-fn=\"d719003a-181b-4d63-9731-ee5824248544\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#d719003a-181b-4d63-9731-ee5824248544\" id=\"d719003a-181b-4d63-9731-ee5824248544-link\">3<\/a><\/sup> It&#8217;s an unpleasant experience at best and probably agony to travel through at rush hour. I only visited a few times and could not wait to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent years, after much figurative hand-wringing over a generation or two, the experience coming in from the street is improved. The actual train shed is still more or less the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55258901424_12a93b24d4_b.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Are there any train sheds that aren&#8217;t dreary? <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fauxback train station<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former James Farley Post Office, across 8<sup>th<\/sup> Avenue from the existing Penn Station is now <a href=\"https:\/\/moynihantrainhall.nyc\/\"><strong>Moynihan Train Hall<\/strong><\/a>. Championed by <strong>Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan<\/strong>, the hall is an adaptive reuse with stone exterior and interior walls. It&#8217;s monumental and was contemporary to the 1910 station. The opening, in 2021, was almost two decades after its namesake died. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55258901534_2d18c36cf5_b.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Moynihan Train Hall pylons in May 2026, photo by William F. Yurasko\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Natural light flows in through the glass ceiling structure. Restaurants, shops and lounges line the central plaza. Pylons with track numbers lead to escalators and stairs. It&#8217;s far from the claustrophobia I previously encounterd. Getting around is easy for Amtrak and Long Island Railroad<sup data-fn=\"42647214-02a3-4a84-a6ce-59396008e971\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#42647214-02a3-4a84-a6ce-59396008e971\" id=\"42647214-02a3-4a84-a6ce-59396008e971-link\">4<\/a><\/sup> passengers.<sup data-fn=\"ee7ef589-7ec4-4045-a1db-e7e7c69c1a52\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#ee7ef589-7ec4-4045-a1db-e7e7c69c1a52\" id=\"ee7ef589-7ec4-4045-a1db-e7e7c69c1a52-link\">5<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sitting is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moynihan Hall lacks benches and chairs in the general area. Union Station in Washington, D.C. and seemingly every other new transit development shares this hostile architecture. Philadelphia&#8217;s 30<sup>th<\/sup> Street Station, to its credit, has seating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even with improvements, I still rank Moynihan below D.C.&#8217;s Union and Philly&#8217;s 30<sup>th<\/sup> in overall grandeur. But it&#8217;s more than an incremental improvement at least. Perhaps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/nation\/new-yorks-penn-station-to-get-8-billion-remodel-with-columns-sunlight-and-trumps-name\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/nation\/new-yorks-penn-station-to-get-8-billion-remodel-with-columns-sunlight-and-trumps-name\"><strong>more is to come<\/strong><\/a> (PBS)&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55258806618_6129468531_b.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Moynihan Train Hall seen from 8th Ave in May 2026, photo by William F.
