“The Winning Pitcher Is Hanrahan, Now 1-3”<\/b><\/a> – Nationals Journal, The Post<\/i>
Nats win suspended game; now it’s back to normal <\/b><\/a> – Chatter, The Wash. Times<\/i>
It has been suggested that the 2009 Washington Nationals are a team that finds new ways to lose. This evening, in Houston, they found a new way to win. Prior to the start of the first game of the Astros series at Houston, the Nats finished the last game of the Astros series from Washington that was suspended due to rain on May 5.<\/p>\n

When we last saw these two teams together, Joel Hanrahan<\/span> had pitched a scoreless top half of the 11th inning. RF Elijah Dukes<\/span> had just walked in the bottom of the 11th inning of game tied at 10 on Cinco de Mayo. Then the monsoon started and the game was delayed and ultimately postponed until this evening in Houston.<\/p>\n

Much has changed since that game. Dukes was demoted to AAA Syracuse. Hanrahan was traded to Pittsburgh<\/span><\/a> with OF Lastings Milledge<\/span> for OF Nyjer Morgan<\/span> and P Sean Burnett<\/span>. Kip Wells<\/span>, who pitched prior to Hanrahan was let go. <\/p>\n

When play resumed, Morgan pinch run for Dukes. Josh Willingham<\/span> singled to advance him to second. Josh Bard then hit a 2-2 to second, a likely inning ending double play, but shortstop Miguel Tejada throw the ball over the first baseman’s head, allowing Morgan to score, game over, Nats win 11-10.<\/p>\n

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the last time a team completed a walk-off win in an opposing stadium was 1975. The Yankees’ game against the Twins at Shea Stadium (while Yankee Stadium was being renovated) on July 12 was suspended in the middle of the 14th inning with the score tied, 6-6. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n
