The Nats got down early when ¡LIVAN! gave up two runs in the third. Nick Johnson got one of them back with a triple that scored Jose Guillen. The next batter, Vinny Castilla, got Johnson home on a ground out. That would be all the scoring for the rest of “regulation” as ¡LIVAN! and Josh Beckett dueled.

The Marlins blinked first, replacing Beckett in the ninth with Jim Mecir. ¡LIVAN! stayed in to pitch the ninth and I thought to myself, “I have a bad feeling about this” since his pitch count was approaching 150 pitches. ¡LIVAN! must have found my lack of faith disturbing, so he proved by wrong by getting out of the inning without giving up any runs. Then, I pulled a Frank Robinson and passed out.

Thankfully, when I awoke there was still a ballgame on. Chad Cordero got through the 10th without allowing a baserunner — it must have been a dream. Naturally, the Nats failed to capitalize, so we were spared Cordero closing the game with a 1-2-3 inning two nights in a row, protecting us from unreasonable expectations.

In the 11th, Bobby Ayala decided to pitch Cordero style and let the lead run on. The important thing here is that runner did not score and not that I cannot remember the exact sequence of events.

In the bottom of the inning, Jamey Carroll lead off with a walk off of Nate Bump (HDFS ’02). Jose Guillen came up and hit a ground ball the pitcher, sure to be turned into a double play…but no! Bump tossed the ball over high and prevented it from being fielded cleanly; both runners safe. With the winning run at second and another one on first, things looked good.

Fearing imminent doom, Florida elected to walk the next batter, Johnson. The decision looked smart after Castilla popped up and failed to get the runner home. However, the intentional pass merely delayed the loss for the Fish. Rookie of the Month Ryan Church hit a fly to left field that was deep enough for Carroll to tag up and head home. The throw was way off the mark and the ballgame ended with Mel Proctor screaming into the microphone (again) as Carroll slid across the plate. Good night, everyone!

More for The Wash.
