MLB Talks to Officials In D.C.<\/b><\/a> – The Post<\/i>

Officials were in town yesterday and Mayor Tony Williams<\/b> had this to say: “What you’ve heard around is there’s a lot of support there [for D.C.]. But at the highest levels, there’s still resistance to coming here. They’re still looking for a way not to be here, because of the obvious reasons.” What a discouraging quote.

ONLY 10 DAYS UNTIL KICKOFF<\/h2>\n

Last night guest editor Fritz Hamme<\/b> and I went to the Phil Grosz<\/b> event at Crystal City Sports Pub<\/b>. We left feeling hopeful. Phil spoke for over and hour and here are some of the highlights:<\/p>\n

  • The program revamps to a corporate structure so that it will be ready to have a new coach, from outside the system<\/b>, when Joe Paterno<\/b> steps down. After ’99 JoePa had consolidated power and run the program as a “sole-proprietorship” which no longer works in college football.
    \n<\/p>\n
  • Galen Hall<\/b> will have more control over the offense than Fran Ganter<\/b> did and Jay Paterno<\/b> will have less. Hall is signed for 3 years and was the “best available” given the program’s situation. Phil was very high on Galen.
    \n<\/p>\n
  • The assistants are “playing for their jobs” the next few years and had not been getting along well last year.
    \n<\/p>\n
  • There are four NFL prospects on the o-line.
    \n<\/p>\n
  • Austin Scott<\/b> is an important part of the equation, but not the whole equation.
    \n<\/p>\n
  • Rodney Kinlaw<\/b> has recovered from his injury and could be a huge threat.
    \n<\/p>\n
  • Zack Mills<\/b> is the starter at QB, period.
    \n<\/p>\n
  • Wideouts are still a huge question mark.
    \n<\/p>\n
  • Lots of one back sets.
    \n<\/p>\n
  • Defensive line should be greatly improved.
    \n<\/p>\n
  • Linebackers may be a little green, but should become very good.\n
