Sheppard gives thanks for place in history<\/b><\/a> – yankees.com<\/i>
Bob Sheppard<\/span>, the voice of Yankee Stadium from 1951 to 2008, has officially retired at age 99. He does not believe that he will be able to regain the stamina to handle duties as public address announcer. In addition to the 3+ hours of baseball, he had to travel from his home on Long Island and it is just too much. He retired as the voice of the New York Giants in 2006 for similar reasons.<\/p>\n

Sheppard was in very poor health for the last few years, dropping down to 103 lbs at one point. He is doing better, up to 137 lbs, but his doctor will not clear him for a trip to new Yankee Stadium until he hits 145 lbs.<\/p>\n

Sheppard’s successor is Paul Olden<\/span>. A recording of Sheppard’s voice will be continue to be heard when Yankees captain Derek Jeter<\/span> comes up to bat.<\/p>\n
