This article is really about the rivalry between former co-owners of the late Texas Chili Parlor <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Hazel Calloway<\/span> and <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Barbara Abbott<\/span>. The two bought the place and couldn&#8217;t stand each other within 2 years. Eventually, they split and Calloway opened Hazel&#8217;s Texas Chili Parlor in 1966. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hardtimes.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Hard Times Cafe<\/span><\/a> founder <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Fred Parker<\/span> fondly remembered Hazel&#8217;s and in 1980 opened Hard Times Cafe in Old Town Alexandria with a similar recipe and spirit.
