Washington Nationals beat Philadelphia Phillies, 7-5<\/b><\/a> – The Post<\/i>
An encouraging 4-5<\/b><\/a> – Nats Insider<\/i>
Scott Olsen<\/b>, who didn’t think he’d be back in the majors yet<\/b><\/a> (nationals.com<\/i>), was pitching pretty well yesterday. He entered the sixth inning with a reasnoable pitch count and having allowed only one run. His control faltered in that inning though as he allowed a single and two consecutive walks, I was wondering why Jim Riggleman<\/b> didn’t pull him. A Juan Castro<\/b> hit single scored two runs and Olsen, who came within an out of the second quality start by a Washington Nationals pitcher in 2010, was done. Tyler Clippard<\/b> came aboard and walked in a run and the Nats were in a 4-1 hole. It was at that time I arrived home with my son and wasn’t able to listen to the game. I’ll admit I was feeling discouraged about the Nats chances, figuring it was another loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.<\/p>\n

So, I was pleasantly surprised sometime later when I snuck a glance at the game on TV and saw the Nats had scored four runs. Ian Desmond singled home Alberto Gonzales to put D.C. within two. Then Adam Dunn “closed my eyes and swung” on the first pitch Danny B\u00e1ez threw to him. Dunn circled the bases for his long-awaited first home run of 2010. Ivan Rodriguez, who’s been on a tear this year, got on base, setting the table for something special. Ryan Zimmerman<\/span>, who hasn’t played since Sunday due to a tight hamstring was sent out to pinch hit. He homered and the Nats were winning. Late runs have been rare this April for Washington. Two more runs were added in the ninth and its a good thing because given his first opprutunity for a multi-inning save, Matt Capps continued the grand<\/strike> Nats tradition of nailbiting saves. He gave up a home run and two other hits, but held on for his fourth save. Final score Washington 7 PHILADELPHIA 5<\/b><\/p>\n

So, after nine games, six against the Phillies and three against the New York Mets, the Nats come home with a 4-5 record and a ten-game homestand waiting for them. They haven’t played very well (see quality starts, lack of homers from 3 and 4 hitters) and yet could be .500 at the end of today. I’ll take it, it sure beats the 1-7 or worse starts we have been seeing.<\/p>\n

By the way, a great gamer by Adam Kilgore<\/b> today. I really enjoy his enthusiasm.<\/p>\n

I don’t like the Phillies “day” uniforms, especially the blue caps.<\/p>\n

Everybody wore “42” for Jackie Robinson Day. Douglas Adams was right<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n
