I keep track of Pennsylvania politics a little bit because I spend so much time up there and my favorite university is funded in part (though less and less) by the Commonwealth.

Right now, a fair amount of people in rural Pennsylvania are not very happy with Gov. Ed Rendell. Some of it is for the way things have gone in his term, but a good deal of it is the fact that he is from Philly and that city/region is not considered to be the “real Pennsylvania” just like Northern Virginia is not the “real Virginia” (amen to that!). That regional bias kept a candidate from the largest city from being governor for nearly 80 years.

Swann has some definite upsides. First, he is incredibly telegenic. He speaks well, has a great smile and is just so likeable. He also won four Super Bowls with the most popular team in most of the state (geographically speaking, not necessarily in terms of population) and stuck around after retirement. How can you not like him? He also has no political history to be held against him, though that can be a double-edged sword. He is a Republican, which is how a lot of the voters between the Pittsburgh and Philly metro areas vote.

I am curious to see how he is received. Since he has no public record, no one knows how much his views correspond with those of his party. not too mention he has never held public office. Also, it is fair to say that some Pennsylvanians are not afraid to voice their skepticism of people with skin as dark as Swann’s. While this is not a view unique to Pennsylvania, I seem to hear it more often up there. However, a bigger question for me though is how voters will react to seeing Swann going negative, an inevitable fact in modern politics. Can someone who so well known for being such a nice guy get away with mudslinging? That to me is the biggest question of his campaign. I am looking forward to watching it from afar.

©MMX William F.
