On Sunday I walked over Key Bridge to Georgetown to catch the Lady Lions vs. Hoyas. This was actually my first women’s basketball game; I’m not a big basketball fan and coach Rene Portland really rubs me the wrong way. Nevertheless, a chance to see a Penn State team a few miles from my apartment was enticing enough to get me there.
The Lady Lions have been pretty medicore for the last couple of seasons and their play on Sunday was too. The shooting was sloppy and the turned the ball over a whole lot. In other words, it was like watching the men’s team.
Georgetown did not get discouraged by a 10 point deficit and went ahead by one in the second half, but ran out of gas. The Lady Lions turned turned it on and pulled out a 52-44 win that was closer than it looked.
The atmosphere at McDonough Gym was well, a gym. It was quite noisy, despite only being half full (2,500 capacity). You couldn’t talk ot the person next to you, which is fine. The Hoya Pep Band was there as well.
The home team was outdrawn by the visitors — two tour buses brought Lady Lion fans from Happy Valley. They were not particularly loud during the game, but before each half they made plenty of noise.
It was fun, I think I’d go to see them again if they were in town. Hopefully, Portland will be gone and Suzie McConnell-Serio will be head coach by then.
