U.S. sports branding is powerful enough to overcome anti-American attitudes

Seeing this photograph of unrest in Lebanon on nytimes.com this morning reminded me a one of the most interesting images in the days following 9/11. I remember a photo of a bunch of Palestinian kids chanting “death to America” or something similar (note: Americans don’t generally gather on street corners and say “death to the Palestinians”) featured a kid wearing a Chicago Bears jersey. I wondered if the kid had the thought process of “America may be the great satan, but man, da Bears rule!”
