Large-capacity, alcohol-free venue gets ready to open – CDT
Frost Night Club to occupy space on Calder Way
STATE COLLEGE — Mak McKeehan figured this would be the last place his business plan would land.
But when he and his business partner kicked around an idea for an under-21 entertainment venue, McKeehan said, they found State College to be the best place on the East Coast.
And so, after months of preparation, the Frost Night Club and Lounge is planning to open this spring at 459 E. Calder Way.
The kicker: It has no liquor license.
I understand why they picked State College — 25,000 underage students. Where else on the East Coast is there that great a concentration of 18-20 year olds?
I have often wondered if “non-alcoholic bar” in State College would succeed. If I was running Frost, I’d drop the “mocktails” like virgin magaritas and focus more on the energy drinks, coffee, plus a wide variety of sodas and juice. Also, the 18-and-over makes sense because college kids won’t hang out with 16 y/o “townie” high school kids. It will be interesting to see if this place makes it, and for how long.
Thanks to CDT editor Bob Heisse for getting the link fixed.
