Rene Portland resigns as PSU women’s basketball coach – CDT
Rene Portland is out as the Penn State Women’s Basketball coach. While she built the program into a perennial NCAA Tournament team, she undermined it by running a lot of players off the team. Recently, years of allegations about alleged discrimination caught up with her when the university concluded she had violated a nondiscrimination policy when she forced Jen Harris off the team. In February Harris, Portland and the university settled a civil suit out of court. It is reasonable to speculate that Portland’s resignation is part of that settlement.
The bottom line is Portland had to go, she had too much baggage for the program to go forward. It is a shame it had to end this way. Her press conference is this afternoon, I will be very interested in what she has to say.
My prediction for her replacement — Suzie McConnell-Serio, Lady Lion great and WNBA coaching veteran.
