Nats take series, move out of 30th place

Washington 4 CINCINNATI 3 (ESPN Boxscore)

I didn’t get to see any of last night’s game because I was at the Bart Richards Award a topic I’ll write about next week. When I got to my car and turned on the radio, I was quite pleased to learn that the Nats had taken the series over the Reds with a 4-3 victory.

1B Dimitri Young went 3 for 4 last night and drove in two runs. SS Cristian Guzman hit his first home run of the season. P Mike Bacsik pitched 7 2/3 innings for the win, his first since 2004. He has a 1.98 ERA in two starts with the Nationals this season. Last spring, the Nationals couldn’t find a spot for him and let him go. A 11-0 AAA season in the Diamondbacks organization made ssistant general managers Mike Rizzo and Bob Boone beg for him to sign with D.C. again. So far, it has paid off. His success and the success of other Nats pitchers can be traced to C Brian Schneider.

Both broadsheets write about former Nat Gary Majewski. He hasn’t been following the controversy over his trade to Cincy. “I don’t read the paper. Don’t look at the Internet — if it’s not about hunting or fishing.” He remains close with Chad Cordero who attended his wedding in the offseason. Majewski also lost his half-sister in an ATV accident recently — “People die every day, and it sucks it’s a family member. But you grieve a couple days, and then you just got to get back to what you’re doing.”

Speaking of Cordero, he faced four batters in his save.

3B Ryan Zimmerman talks about his favorite ballparks (The Wash. Examiner) and chooses Wrigley Field as #1. Petco Park and Minute Maid Park (he like the choo-choo) also get high marks. Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati has “nothing unique” about it is well lit.

As noted in my Google Reader, Jacqueline Dupree is now getting a Post byline once a week in the District Extra. Her first article is Zoning Commission Hits Home Run for Parking Lots.

Congratulations Wayne Krivsky, you are now the GM for the worst NL team (Cincy Enquirer)!

It is on to St. Louis tonight to take on Dr. Calvert’s Cardinals.
