The only way to save Landmark Mall is to destroy it

Improvements Coming Soon to Area MallsWTOP
Landmark Mall, which started out as a shopping center and was turned into a mall may be turned into a mixed-use development.

“Much of it will be torn down and replaced with buildings that have retail on the ground floor, but have residential and office above with internal street grids,” says Faroll Hamer, Alexandria’s Planning and Zoning director. “The plan includes more property than just the mall. It really includes the whole Van Dorn Corridor.”

Sounds like a good idea.

I have lived a couple of miles up Van Dorn from Landmark for about eight months and I think I’ve only been to it once. Malls are not my thing, but Landmark is particularly awful. I’m glad that Alexandria could be seeing some of the new urbanism that makes Arlington wonderful.
