New Nats uniforms?

Today’s Uniwatch entry focuses on a survey mlb.com sent to 20,000 registered users who are part of Fans At Bat — essentially a focus group. The questions in the survey were about the Nationals uniforms, so it appears a redesign is under consideration.

I am content with the current uniforms, particularly the home set, so I don’t need to see any change. I’m not opposed to making “WASHINGTON” a less blocky typeface on the road grays, but otherwise I think the Nats have good uniforms. They are distinctive enough to be easily recognizable too. I would be concerned if they did away with the curly W hats though. In 2005 I argued that Nats had one of the top three caps for a new team since the 1969 expansion. In retrospect, only the Royals have a legitimate argument about having a better introductory cap than the Nationals.

The earliest new uniforms could be unveiled would be 2009. I believe there is a deadline of May 31 for changing next year’s uniforms. I don’t think there will be major changes though, because it is kind of stupid to completely overhaul uniforms and logos the year after a ballpark opens. We may see some tweaks, but I doubt anything dramatic will occur. Ownership has said that they love the curly W too.
