Wait a minute, the Caps won a shootout?!

Someone asked me yesterday what I thought of the Capitals chances last night and I mentioned that I thought they could win, but they better do it in regulation. Their opponent, the Edmonton was something like 12-2-1 in the extra period and shootout, so being deadlocked after sixty minutes seemed like a really bad idea. The Caps shootout record was something dreadful like 3-19.

I listened most of the third period on the radio (I miss Ron Weber!) coming home late yesterday. When I got home and turned on the television, it was already round 3 of the shootout. It kept going and going and I remarked to Erica that I hoped scholar and gentleman Donald Brashear could get the game-winner. He didn’t and it went to round 12 when Matt Bradley got one through. Olie Kolzig stopped Sheldon Souray’s slapshot to win the game after facing 12 shots in the shootout. Given the recent comments and play by Kolzig, he really need this one and I’m glad he got it. Hopefully this will get him refocused and ready for a strong run as Washington makes its improbable march towards the playoffs. They are only four points out (Vs.) of eighth place in the conference and first place in the weak Southeast division. Who’d of thunk?
