UNIVERSITY PARK, Penna. — Blue White Saturday went about how I expected. We drove up to State College, sat in traffic waiting to park. Despite being off my game, we tailgated a little and wound up missing most of the first quarter, so we missed Stephfon Green‘s long TD run. We wound up sitting next to a passageway at about the 60th row, so we really couldn’t see much of the game until we moved up three rows. The attendance was estimated at 73,000 and it seems like about 20,000 of them were standing right in front of us.
I couldn’t get much into the game because it is just a scrimmage after all. What did we learn about the 2008 team? Not much, the offense never seemed in sync in the second and third quarters and Daryll Clark might have trouble with short range touch passes. Kevin Kelly missed a long extra point attempt short, so let’s hope he isn’t needed to win some games.
Many former Nittany Lion greats including Paul Posluszny, Larry Johnson and Jay Alford were introduced during the game. The Homecoming part of halftime mentioned that it was the most exclusive Homecoming which struck me as more candor than we’re accustomed to from the Greek system. THON had a part too and the Blue Band did not march or even peform.
After the game, we headed downtown for a little bit before leaving. Most of all, the trip was an excuse to visit Happy Valley and joke around.
The most interesting part of the weekend seems to have been the Joe Patenro press conference (Fight on State). David Jones of the Patriot-News asked tough, but fair questions about Paterno’s status and the state of the program. You can imagine how well that went over. The column is worth a read.
