Nationals Take 2nd Straight – The Post
Like Lannan, Nats’ Stammen stymies Mets – The Wash. Times
Craig Stammen and John Lannan are each other’s best friends in baseball, dating back to their first day as pros with the Vermont Lake Monsters, Washington’s short season A team. This is very important to the beat writers, who both focused on this in their stories.
On Tuesday, Lannan shutout the Mets. Last night, for four innings at least, Stammen was doing even better — a no-hitter. That did not last and he did not get a complete game, but Stammen pitched 7 1/3 innings of 1-run ball. It was another strong July performance for Stammen who had five strikeouts and 10 ground ball outs last night and has a 2.14 ERA over his last four starts.
Josh Willingham got his first hit since the All-Star break, a two-run homer that was the difference in the 3-1 win over the Mets.

RHP Jordan Zimmermann was scheduled to pitch tonight’s make-up game against the St. Louis Cardinals, but was instead sent to the DL with elbow soreness. Colin Balestar will take his place in the rotation. Balestar has not been great for AAA Syracuse this season.
