For several years, I joked that my Capital Weather Gang subscription came with a newspaper, The Washington Post. Unfortunately, The Post made it clear in 2024 it was no longer interested in being a serious publication1 so, with some regret, I ended my subscription.
The subsequent years saw further self-immolation of the once great news organization. The Post even killed off Sports (The Ringer).
Capital Weather is independent again
Thankfully, this weekend brought the news that Capital Weather – no longer a gang, was leaving The Post3.
After years of building this community, we’re excited to welcome you to our new, independent home for D.C.-area weather, across our website, newsletter and app. This is something we’ve been thinking about and working toward for a long time, and we’re grateful you’re here at the very start.

This is a return to the early days of Capital Weather, when it was a scrappy operation run by area meteorologists. They now stand on their own and history suggests they will stand tall.
For more than two decades, Capital Weather has been the DC region’s go-to source for clear, credible, and compelling weather coverage. We started as an independent website in 2004, partnered with The Washington Post starting in 2008, and became independent again in 2026.
