Yesterday, Carroll H. Cook (’54 Pitt) briefly discussed the alma mater during his weekly chat.

JT, Wilmington, DE: Beano, Penn State is no USC, but is running a strong spread offense this year. Seems like Ohio State had a lot of trouble with that in Los Angeles… do you think the Nittany Lions can go take one, finally, in Columbus this season?

SportsNation Beano Cook: Yes, I think they are a dark horse to play for the national title. Buyt they will have to go undefeated. But it is possible. They will be the underdog against Ohio State and Wisconsin, and I definitely think they will win one of those games, and maybe two. They will ned help though, because if you have an undefeated teams in the Pac-10, SEC, Big XII, and Big Ten, the Big Ten team will have no shot at the title game, because the conference is down

So is this like Mike McQueary’s dark-horse Heisman candidacy that Beano briefly promoted?

You know I cannot disagree with him that much though — scary.

Lou (Bethesda, MD): Beano, PSU-Temple on Saturday. Al Golden has done a nice job at a place where coaches usually go to die. Is he PSU’s next coach?

SportsNation Beano Cook: Well I do not think he will be the next guy, but he may be some day. But he is an excellent coach. He has made Temple compatitive and he is destined for the big time. Depending on how many jobs are open, I think Skip Holtz and Al Golden will be very sought after.

Hmmm, Run Up the Score!‘s real name is not Lou and he is not from Bethesda. As for Golden, I think getting Temple to two bowl games in a row would probably make the Penn State job a much bigger possibility. Let’s see if he does it.
