D.C. Plans River Ferry ExperimentThe Post
Commuter Runs Would Start in ’06
It looks like there will be ferry service to D.C. starting next year with the routes to be determined. I am a bit skeptical this can work for commuters just trying to get across the river because there has to be a way to get them to river and Metro does not have any locations near the Potomac waterfront. Terminals with parking do not really help that much either, since you would still have to drive all the way to the river. The best bet for this to be successful is probably for commuters from outside the Beltway. If I owned a house Woodbridge (I hope I can live much, much closer in when it is time to buy) the idea of parking near the river and sailing up the Potomac past Mount Vernon everyday sounds a lot more attractive than Shirley Highway. There is some tourism potential too.

In the DCist post that brought this to my attention, Yuda commented it would be a great way to get from Old Town to the proposed ballpark and I agree with him. A trip up the Potomac is a lovely way to spend a summer evening. NY Waterway provides this kind of service to Yankee Stadium and I would like to try that some day. Has anybody out there taken NY Waterway to get to Yankee Stadium?
