What’ve we got? We’ve got heart!

WASHINGTON 7 Florida 6 (ESPN Boxscore)

The Nats first win (The Post) of the season (The Wash. Times) was a dramtic come-from-behind victory (The Wash. Examiner). Dimitri Young knocked in Kory Casto to give Manny Acta his first win as manager. I want to talk about something else though.

Metroblogging DC’s Tom Bridge, told me in an email that “Heart” from Damn Yankees was played in the seventh inning. This song, sung by the slumping Senators, is a Broadway classic that no other city can claim like ours.

I have been advocating making Heart a Nats tradition forever, especially I saw a revival of the show on New Year’s Eve 2005. It seems especially appropriate for this year’s team, something Thom Loverro notes today (The Wash. Times) as well. Last year, Post columnist Marc Fisher also agreed that Heart needs to be played. It looks like the braintrust is getting message. Keep it up Stan! If you are not familiar with the tune, check it out on iTunes or at least read the lyrics and see what I mean. Just imagine thousands of people singing along, it’ll become one of baseball’s great traditions.

Back on the field, Ryan Church hit a three run homer in the 6th to pull within two runs of Florida. Starter Matt Chico had a rough MLB debut (The Wash. Times), giving up six over four (including 3 HRs) to put the Nats in a deep hole. In all, the Nats had 16 hits. The bullpen came up big (The Post), shutting down the Marlins for the last five innings. Jon Rauch gets the first curly W of the season.

Now that the Nats have heart, the focus can return to fixing the concessions (The Wash. Times). Kasten:

“I have had some very, very direct and candid conversations with both the District manager and the head of the whole company,” Kasten said. “It certainly was unsatisfactory in many ways. I have no interest in hearing any explanations.”

I like what he is saying, but I don’t forsee it helping.

Oh yeah, the city wants you to take Metro to the new ballpark (The Wash. Examiner). My advice to WMATA — be over prepared.

Someone at The Wash. Examiner is taking dictation from Jim Bowden again.

MLB Extra Innings is staying on cable (The Post).
