Tonight in Secaucus, N.J. the Washington Wizards won the 2010 NBA Draft Lottery ensuring the #1 overall pick. Representing the Wiz was outgoing owner Irene Pollin, wife of late owner Abe Pollin. Her reaction was fantastic and instantly made her a folk hero in D.C. if not basketball circles everywhere except perhaps the New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets fanbase. @dcsportsbog has a great still photo of Mrs. Pollin’s reaction too.
By the time the draft occurs, Ted Leonsis should have closed on the deal for the Wizards and Verizon Center. He begins his ownership with a #1 pick, presumably John Wall of Kentucky or Evan Turner of Ohio State — a good start we hope. The last time the Wizards drafted #1, well, the important thing was Kwame Brown won a D.C. council seat. Or got traded for Caron Butler, one or the other.
Let this be the end of the curse of Les Boulez!
