It is a HUGE Monday here at WWN! Stories about two of our favorite things, D.C. baseball and Penn State football, from both today and yesterday are up. My advice — pace yourself, it may take some time. Also, check back this evening, I may have another update because there may be more stories out there.
THE NEXT YURASKO GENERATION
Erica, Christopher, and I were all down in Virginia Beach this weekend to see our cousin Frank (and his wife) Melissa’s son, Frankie, who is barely two weeks old. Check out the gallery and see the first time I have ever held a baby. Our other Yurasko cousins, plus their significant others, were there too, though they did not all make it into the gallery.
WHAT ARE THE EXPOS ACTUALLY LIKE?
With Expos, Little Assembly Required – The Post
They are better than their current, 55 – 74 record and Omar Minaya needs to be retained as GM.
ONLY 5 DAYS UNTIL KICKOFF
Ron Cook – Pitt-Penn State series is bigger than Paterno – Post-Gazette
Not surprisingly, Pittsburgh newspaper columnists are blaming Joe Paterno for holding up the Penn State-Pitt series and not Walt Harris. Harris went off on Paterno earlier this summer because it gets the Pittsburgh faithful (all four of them) to overlook what a mediocre coach he has been. It seems to have worked.

Trio of Penn State – Times-Leader
A look at the top three RBs on the depth chart. Neither has pulled away yet.
SUNDAY EXPOS NEWS
Va. Stadium Financing Still Unclear – The Post
I am sure MLB will get reassurances from Va. like D.C. has given.
George Solomon – No Lie, the Moment of Truth Grows Near – The Post
I think he is right. The tension is terrible. He also mentions Frank Herzog.
Thom Loverno – Baseball: So close and yet so far – The Wash. Times
Well said…
SUNDAY LIONS STORIES
A few stories from yesterday. I do not have time to comment on them much, but Ron Bracken says 5 – 6. I disagree, but then again, he has been covering them since before I was born, so perhaps he has a better idea. I hope not.
The Lion in Late, Late Autumn – The Times Magazine
A Sunday magazine article on Joe Paterno; how many head coaches get that treatment?
Penn State counting on improved play from defensive line – CDT
They will be better. If the offense can stay on the field now and again, they will be much better.
Ron Bracken – Nittany Lions should be better but who knows how much – CDT
Wanted: Playmakers – Patriot-News
Well, real playmakers, not like the ESPN ones; we had those last year.
When you’re everybody’s hero, it hurts a little more when the cheers die down – Patriot-News
A feature story on Zack Mills, once thought to be the savior of the program. I think he will have a good year, maybe even all Big11Ten if we are lucky.
Hall needs a home – Patriot-News
Will it be the sideline or the booth?
Pitt-PSU renewal is all talk – Post-Gazette
Apparently, there were discussions about renewing the Penn State-Pitt series, but Pitt coach Walt Harris ran his mouth and now Paterno is not interested. That is rather funny, since Harris was trying to deflect criticism of his underachieving program by going after Penn State. Thanks Walt, this latest blunder makes you the laughing stock of Pennsylvania football, even though we went 3 – 9. Better win the Big (L)East if you want to keep your job.
OLD SCHOOL VALUES – NY Post
The reporter in this article is a PSU alumnus, in fact I believe he went to the Old School (aka Penn State Hazleton) — an amusing coincidence.
Mills feels aged by PSU years – Tribune-Review
He has almost seen all you can as a college QB.
Mills ready to craft his own legacy – York Sunday News
Even more on Zack.
