25 years of The Wash. Times

Today is the 25th anniversary of The Washington Times, D.C.’s other broadsheet newspaper. It emerged not long after The Washington Star, once the premier paper in D.C., folded suddenly.

I would be a lot more excited about this milestone if the newspaper was not owned by Rev. Sun Myung Moon, founder of a cult called the Unification Church . Simply put, Rev. Moon and his messianic complex scares me. He is way too powerful and could prove to be quite dangerous (some argue he already is).

Oddly enough, Rev. Moon’s newspaper does not make money. I believe the paper has yet to see $1 of profit, but continues because Moon wants to ensure conservative viewpoints get column inches which is all well and good. I have said many times that if profit was a motivation, going tabloid would have been the right move. Now, it is too late with The Post’s Express tab and The Wash. Examiner for free. The circulation of The Wash. Times does not even crack the top 100 in the nation.

Despite the Moon’s ownership, I congratulate the employees on making it this long. Being a multi-newspaper town is a rare thing these days and Washingtonians benefit from that fact.
