“They need to get the ball to Derrick Williams in space”
This season, I have noticed that analysts on college football telecasts are using the term “in space” an awful lot. I had never heard it before and frankly, I don’t want to hear it again. As far as I can tell, the term means that anywhere between the backfield and the endzone that a running back, wide receiver, etc. that they don’t have a defensive player around them for oh, a yard and a half, is “in space.” It sounds stupid because it does not mean anything.
Or am I not up to date on the latest in football terminology? Maybe I need to ask Awful Announcing.
