ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Groundhog Day brought snow for the third consecutive day to the Washington, D.C. area. Sunday’s snow was steady, but measurements never exceeded 2¼ inches. Compaction and melting apparently kept it from piling up. The trend continued into Tuesday.

Sleet fell briefly on Monday and evening squall coated city streets, sidewalks and cars with maybe half an inch of fresh powder.

2 more inches of snowfall

This morning, snow started falling again and by 11 a.m., well over another was measured. Yardy measured 3 3/4 inches after being down to 2 inches this morning.

Snow continued to fall into the early afternoon, but measurable amounts declined. By 1 p.m. it was back around 2 inches, despite fairly steady snowfall.

Overall, “official Yardy” measurements add up to 4 inches. Anecdotally, there has been more, but it has not had staying power.

Meanwhile, outside the Beltway

I had two consecutive client calls with Chicagoland on Monday morning. They had 10-12 inches along with aching backs and broken snowblowers.

Their reaction to our snow was the equivalent of “bless you heart.”

In North Jersey, a friend noted that it was such a big storm that a major delivery/logistic corporation cancelled work.

Pennsylvania’s capital region had a foot.
