ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The first winter storm of 2026 and third of the season began Saturday night with flurries around 11 p.m. Nearly a week of hype preceded this storm with ever-changing forecasts trending more towards icy.
Just before 9 a.m., the precipitation shifted from light, powdery snow to sleet. At 9:07 a.m., Yardy measured approximately 5 3⁄4 inches of snow in the backyard. Then I shoveled the sidewalk and driveway while it was still fluffy.
The storm is expected to continue throughout the day with more sleet and then freezing rain. Additional measurements are planned.
1 p.m. update
Another inch of sleet/snow has piled up on paved surfaces. I just shoveled the walks and driveway again – very dense.
Sunset update

At 5:15 p.m. EST we were up to 8½ inches of total accumulation – snow and sleet.

Don’t hate winter, use it
While it’s been suggested that “wind blasted frozen hellscape” is no way to live, I find lots of joys in winter activities. In particular, I enjoy skiing and broomball.
