If thawing snowcrete has you crestfallen, I propose a solution – indoor broomball! Even if you aren’t missing out on the deep freeze, you can gain the respect of your peers by playing this niche sport.
District Broomball plays at Tucker Road Ice Rink in Fort Washington, Md., just a few minutes from the Wilson Bridge. There will be at least four teams this season and as many as five.
The competitive but friendly co-rec league takes all kinds, 18+ and up – tall, short, skinny, heavy – we take all kinds.
Try broomball for free March 3
Broomball is same basic rules as ice hockey, tactics and strategy, but in special shoes instead of skates. The stick is a “broom” and the puck is a ball about the size of a grapefruit.
The Tuesday before the season starts, District Broomball hosts a pick-up night – March 3 at 9 p.m. There will be 15 minutes of drills (passing, dribbling, shooting) followed by a game.
Shoes, helmets, and sticks will be available for new players to borrow.

That time we played outdoors
The hard freeze of January froze Holmes Run in Alexandria SOLID. Several District Broomball players joined in an outdoor pickup game.
